This is an original French pattern from a mid 1950s magazine. It outlines the pattern for
a strapless bra and matching girdle and includes adaptations of the pattern for other similar
garments.
The strapless bra is made of a satin lower cup and band and a stretch lace upper cup. It
features two ¼” “baleen” bones inside each cup and one bone on either side seam. It closes in
the back with a French Back Closure, comprised of doubled over, crossed elastic and a Ghook.
The magazine also suggests an elastic closure, comprised of a wide elastic and hooks
and eyes.
The high-waisted Girdle is composed of a total of 6 panels, including stretch panels at
the sides and the center back. The front is composed of two layers of satin and features a
triangular stretch panel at the bottom of center front for ease. The magazine suggests two
layers of satin for the front fabric and “elastic” for the stretch panels. This might mean knit
elastic or cotton knit fabric as seen on extant girdles of the period. However, it also mentions
the use of stretch lace for the elastic panels and insert. The girdle utilizes a left-hand side
zipper closure and features diagonal quilting on the center front in order to control the grain
stretch of the satin and provide support for the tummy area. Seams are boned with steel or
baleen, encased in satin ribbon, linen tape, twill tape, or grosgrain. Garters may be included at
the front and sides of the girdle to hold up stockings.
