The Purple Top Snakehead Cowrie is oval in shape with a raised central area and a flattened base. The purple colouring beautifully contrasts with its rich chocolate coloured layer.
The Purple Top Snakehead Cowrie is oval in shape with a raised central area and a flattened base. The gorgeous purple colouring is revealed when the upper surfaces have been polished and removed. It contrasts beautifully with its rich chocolate coloured layer and the underside of its pale creamy ridged aperture. Cowries in all of their forms are perhaps the most collected of all shells species, with their beautiful colours, smooth porcelain like finish and unique pattern they always invite curious interest. The Purple Top Snakehead Cowrie (cypraea caputserpentis) is an abundant species and can be found in shallow water under loose rocks or boulders along the shoreline and in the nooks and crevices around reefs feeding on seaweed. This seashell is common to the waters of Indo Pacific seas. Sold in packs containing three shells. Size: approx 2.5 - 3.5 cm (1 - 1.5 inches)
