Description

Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral that forms in cubic or octahedral shapes. It’s very easily identifiable and one of the only minerals that has four directions of perfect cleavage that break into pieces with the shape of an octahedron. It can also occur in hydrothermal veins (hot water rising from underground sources) which can be seen with minerals such as Quartz, Calcite & Barite. Fluorite naturally occurs in all colors in the spectrum except for pure fluorite, which tends to be colorless. The coloring you may see a lot is due to impurities, and some of those colors include green, purple, white, yellow, red and pink. This crystal lends its name to the property of fluorescence, which some fluorite from certain localities can display vivid glowing colors under an ultraviolet light. Some of the largest deposits of fluorite can be found in China, Mexico & South Africa. Fluorite can also be used in different industries such as chemical, metallurgical & ceramics. Some of the purest grades of fluorite are a source of fluoride for hydrofluoric acid manufacturing, which is the intermediate source of most fluorine-containing fine chemicals. It is also used in optical and lapidary cases as well. Other notable information on Fluorite Refractive index: 1.43-1.44 (refractive index or index of refraction of a material is a dimensionless number that describes how light propagates through that medium) Specific Gravity: 3.0-3.3 (specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance; equivalently, it is the ratio of the mass of a substance to the mass of a reference substance for the same given volume) Moh’s scale: 4 (scale of hardness running from 1 to 10 using a series of reference minerals; position on scale depends on the ability to scratch minerals rated lower) Metaphysical attributes of Fluorite Fluorite is a powerful wind element stone and can help assist in clearing up confusion, cluttered thoughts, and negativity. It acts as a balancer to the third-eye chakra and to mental energies in general. It also helps in balancing the brain. One looking to make an important/clear-headed choice quickly would benefit from having fluorite. Certain colors of fluorite also have special properties specific to them, but all colors affect mental body, brain and energetic levels of being. Green fluorite can help cleanse and heal the heart chakra; blue is good for the throat, helping aide with clear communication; purple is generally good for purification and access to the mind; and pink can help cleanse and heal the emotional body and works to activate the “higher heart” chakra (2 inches above the heart).
