Van Doren Rubber specialized in making canvas deck shoes with grippy rubber soles. The name Vans was coined when people would say “Let’s head over to Van’s and grab shoes”, Vans took the nickname and ran with it. They produced only 3 pairs and put them in the window. People could come in, order the model and color, and come later to pick up their shoes. Meanwhile the owners rushed tot he factory to produce the shoes. Vans is today known not only as a symbol of alternative sports like skateboarding and snowboarding buti t is becoming recognized and accepted by the fashion industry as the coolest statement sneakers ont he streets, no longer just a shoe for skateboarders.
